Re: Single wheel into a duallyPosted by db on November 17, 2006 at 19:04:43 from (64.12.116.70): In Reply to: Single wheel into a dually posted by Greywolf on November 17, 2006 at 05:26:45:
I was measuring the rear ends a few years back setting on a bench. The one ton with duals has a longer tube for the wheel bearings along with a longer hub. This is to center the tires on the bearings. The one ton with duals uses the same brakes as the one ton with single wheels. The 3/4 ton rear end uses the same housing and hub as the one ton with single wheels, but the 3/4 ton uses narrower brakes by one inch. The backing plate for the one ton with single wheels is different than the backing plate for the 3/4 ton to accomodate the wider brakes. Some different years will have different spring and shock absorber spacing, and will need to be ground off and welded back on. Not all brake shops can turn one ton drums, either single or dual configuration, they tip over the brake lathe, they will need to be taken to a shop that services trucks. You would want to change the front wheels, too as they won't be centered properly to the back wheels. You would want the JB8 brakes for the one ton, and you would want the hub/rotor assembly for the one ton with duals as it will set the wheel out farther. The lower control arm is the same from the 3/4 ton to the one ton, but they have a different part number for the lower ball joint. There is no easy way to change to JB8 brakes if you don't have them, as the steering knuckle would need to be replaced, and they are not made any more. If the knuckle or caliper wear they have a spacer kit to comcpensate for the wear.
