i am doing a conversion myself, a 56 shortbox stepside on a chassis from a 77 chevy 4x4 1 ton ,the 77 was a longbed and 17.25 inches had to come out of the frame,if anyone else does this out there make sure to weld your frame back together properly with fishplating at least 4 inches past your seam on both sides shorten the rear driveshaft the same and of corse a rebalance to keep your fillings in place i think that this is the best way, the chassis has already been engineered by gm and you get all the later model stuff like the good brakes,power steering,ect will help with any question out there mac
