First thing is to open the hood and look at the black pastic heater box on the firewall. On the left(engine side) of the heater air box,two little steel crank arms sprout from the side of the box, with the crank arms hanging down and to the front of the box and are connected together by a metal connecting bar. It is very easy when changing plugs or other engine service to bump that rear crank arm from the front and down position to the front an UP position. This will crank the hot/cold air blend door the wrong way so all air bypasses the heater core and you get no heat. Another thing is to check the heat/cool control cable which connects to the front air box crank arm to make sure the adjustment moves the crank arm fully forward if at all. The cable can break at the heater control end and will not move the air doors at the heater. Verify that the control cranks move when someone moves the control lever from warm to cool. My experience was that I bought my 74 pickup used with only 1700 miles in the winter of 74. The heater was poor at best, would hardly keep the windsheild defrosted in our North Dakota winters, but I lived with it for 2 years untill I had reason to remove the radio to service it. With the radio removed I could look in at the top of the heater controls to see where the control cables attached. The warm/cool cable was the wrong one that would not fit the controls,so the assembly guy just left it laying in there unattached to anything. Of coarse the control cable was set at the mid to cool position. I modified the cable so it would fit the controls and for the first time had plenty of heat. It then made sense to me why the nearly new (1700 miles ) pickup was traded off when only 4 months old. No heat for the frustrated owner that the IH factory and dealer could not,or would not fix!!!!
