Making headway posted by Michael Sheik on December 10, 2006 at 13:53:54: The ammeter SHOULD show a discharge with the key "ON", as the power for the gauges and any accessories that are "ON" is going through the ammeter, not to mention ignition system load, if the engine has stopped at a point in it's rotation where the breaker points are CLOSED. The Ammeter is powered by the magnetic field surrounding the wire that passes through it (if it is an "inductive ammeter", or by the magnetic field surrounding it's internal shunt (if it is a shunt-type ammeter). Tha ammeter is NOT powered through the Instrument Voltage regulator. SO, GREAT NEWS... NO worries!
