father in law bought '53 gmc 228 6 cyl. hydra new. wife and i restored from '91 to '99 engines were built by gmc not pontiac trans is identical to cad, olds, & pontiac of same era. park is achieved by putting trans in reverse and shutting engine off. should only start in neutral. diff between car and truck tranny is trucks had smaller torque convertor. trucks had enclosed driveshaft and 5.13 stump puller rear gears. ours will run at 50 m.p.h. if you push it a little. gmc was first trucks to offer automatics ( in '53) chevy followed in '54 using the same trans we had ours rebuilt by a trans shop in '98 or '99 at about $1100. good luck!
