A grinding noise would probably be coming from either the throw out bearing (release bearing), or I'm suspecting a spring has broken in the pressure plate. You might be able to check the springs from below when you pull that dust cover. Or find part of a spring in the bottom of that dust cover. Then you'll definitely need to replace the clutch assembly. john in ne.
