i had one with the symptoms you describe, it was the timing set, all of the nylon teeth had stripped
off the cam gear. turn the crank by hand with the dizzy cap off both directions, to see if there is more than 5° crankshaft rotation in either direction before the rotor moves, if so, suspect the timing set.
