Dennis, you might have a 272 or 292 Y-block in there. If the left exhaust manifold dumps to a crossover above the engine to the right manifold, and if the valve covers are held on with two bolts thru the top of the valve cover (not around the edges) those are two features of the Y-block. It would be fairly common, as the flathead on a truck that got a lot of hours would probably last 5-10 years, and that would be the timeframe of the y-block. It's a good durable engine with decent torque, but like you pointed out, it ain't a flathead, and if you want originality the flattie could probably be put back in. If you have the original tranny, you will just need the flathead engine and bellhousing, and maybe have to make some mounts if the fellow torched off the orignal mounts.
