You didn't by chance recently replace the cables, did you? Some of the cables out there are far too small to carry the load, and some are aluminum instead of copper. They should be a minimum of 4 gauge, and larger is better, such as 1 or 2 gauge like used on 6-volt. The only thing that will cook cables is a dead short. Some of the "rebuilt" starters are no good. Check the load on the starter too.
