Just don't put big tires on it. The ring gear won't take lots of torque, like what's needed to pull tall tires on good traction. 4L 1st puts out reasonable axle torque (even with the 2.8 and I agree it's not GM's best motor). As long as the tires are close to factory size you'll be OK. The worst thing you can do is spin in mud then hit concrete. The high RPM and torque shock will break the gears. But as long as it can slip a little (like musd to dand or grass) it'll handle it.
