If you have a choice to lenthen or shorten, it's a no brainer. Shorten the drive shaft. To lengthen will take a tube diameter to match, 2 welding paths, and critical alignment setup on the welding jig or lathe. Shorten it and you can make an exact cut on the lathe, tack weld it in place on the lathe, finish up with one weld pass, and balance.
