Off topic: Duals

I'm working with an '89 K3500 Chevy 1 Ton 4WD, which isn't a classic (yet).

I want to convert it to duals. It has the 8 bolt, full floating 1 ton axle, same as on the duallys. My question is, what all besides rims and tires to I need for the conversion? I've gotten a couple of different opinions on the brakes, some say duallys use a wider drum and shoe, others say not.

If I can use the existing drums, do I need to get longer studs?

I've never fooled with duals, I'm assuming they are actually separate rims that "stack" on the same studs. It that right, or am I way out in left field.

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks.
