I posted a question a couple weeks ago about a growling sound in the 4 speed tranny when I got around 15 to 20 mph. I have fixed the noise and thought I would share what I learned. I removed front section of drive shaft, tightened nut (approx. 1/4 turn) holding emer. brake drum to output shaft of tranny and replaced carrier bearing. It is now quiet. One note is that you cannot get the old cast iron housing carrier bearing that I assume was factory. I had to use a new style, stamped steel housing bearing assy. and had to make a modification to the mounting surface for the new bearing to fit up. Not hard - just used 8" piece of 2" channel iron, drilled new holes and welded open portion of channel to existing mounting surface for old bearing. As the song says: I can't drive - 55!!!!!
