Not sure about Chevy or GM specifically, but VIN numbers as we know them today didn't exist before 1981. Vehicle serial numbers were usually stamped into a plate on the vehicle, but before 1981 there was no standard location mandated by law...so manufacturers put them various places on the vehicles. Often times, the serial number on the body matched the serial number of the engine; thus, you hear of "numbers-matching" vehicles, indicating that the vehicle has the original engine. But not all manufacturers used the same numbers on the negine as the serial number on the truck.

I'm most familiar with International trucks...and over the years they put the serial number plates on the firewall, on the left kick panel, and even in the drivers-side door jamb...depending on the year. The only constant for IH was that they also stamped the last 5 or 6 digits of the serial number into the left front frame rail, near the rear spring hanger.
