We always cut our frames on a vertical line, perpendicular to the length of the frame, aligned everything up, welded the frame back together and then bolted a piece of flat metal, at least as thick as the frame, inside the frame, same width as the vertical portion of the frame, which extended several inches to each side (lengthwise)of the cut. This will hold the frame in place if the weld breaks. We usually were working with 2 ton and larger dump trucks and the welds would occasionally crack from the extreme use. Most of the time we bolted 1/2 inch thick metal plates inside the frame.
