It all really began back in 1958 with the 332 police interceptor engines; then the 352 and all the others you mention. I believe the 330, 361 & 391 were all HD engines for the larger trucks with the Sodium filled valves and other HD innards. Back in the late 70s we ordered a brand new factory 391 short block for an LN800. we noticed that the block was marked 352. Over the years I've seen quite a lot of "FE" 390s & 391s with the 352 mark on them. I assume they all were derived from the late '58 or early '59 352 style blocks. Why change a time tested and proven design? The 427 is the most sought after, but a well prepared 428 will run just about as fast and is a lot cheaper.
