Smog pump

Hey y'all, I got a 1983 chevy 3/4 ton suburban with a 454, And I was wondering what would happen if I disconnected the smog pump? Would it help my gas gas mileage any or would it make it worse? I can't really afford for mileage to get any worse. Thanks, TractorMike
