The 17-digit VIN number we're all familiar with today didn't exist until 1981. International put serial numbers--the forerunners of today's VIN numbers--on a metal plate. Sometimes they were on the kick panels, in the 1940's and '50's. In the late '50's, international moved the plates to the door jamb area for most trucks. Not sure where they put them on Metros, because I've never owned one...but you can bet it'll be on an aluminum plate, about 4x6 inches, and the model, serial number, engine horsepower and vehicle GVW will all be on that one plate.
