1951 Chevy Deluxe Ignition

I recently inherited my great grandmothers first car. It is a 1951 Chevy Deluxe. I put a battery in it, turned the key, hit the starter button and it turned over nicely. However, When I shut the key off,hit the starter button, it would still turn over and everything worked just like it did when the key was in the on position. From here, there was no juice to the coil either. Does anybody have any ideas? I am kind of new at this, for I am 17 and just learning. Thankyou very much for all of your help.
