Gas tank float problems

My 63 bel air has a 2 year old fuel tank sending unit that apparantly has a hole in the float. I went from 1/2 tank for a few days to 1/4 and now I am empty all the time. I need to know how is best to fix the float as I haven't been able to find one without the restof the sending unit and hate to shell out the bucks for the whole gizmo again. Will JB weld put up with gas? What about brazing or soldering? I am planning on soldering it as of now but need to hear from someone who knows the right way to go. Not sure what the material is but looks to be brass. What kind of solder should I use? Thanks for your help.
