Presuming you have a straight 6, here goes. Check the driver's side of the engine, below the head and gasket, rear of the block, just in front of the transmission bolt-up. Look for an unusually smooth spot (by now showing rust) about 3" high by 6" long. If you find it start removing the rust w/ a nylon bristle brush and get more aggressive, progressively, until you are using a wire wheel brush on a electric drill (a DREMEL TOOL seems to be just the thing here) at medium speed. UNDER ANY CONDITION DO NOT USE A GRINDER WHEEL !!!

If the rust is being 'difficult' try using, in ascending order, some old 'Coke' (the phosphoric acid dissolves tarnish on copper !!), WD-40, paint and rust remover and, last but not least, naval jelly.

If you want to be more aggressive in the rust removal you can use plumber's acid but, big B-U-T, make real sure you have a large ventilation fan running, a serious 'fume' mask (3-M type) on and 2 seperate 5 gallon buckets on hand. The buckets need to be filled with 1 of 5 gallons of a bleach solution (to neutralize the acid in event of a spill) and 1 bucket of clay based kitty litter, not an organic litter. This one is for the damming and cleanup of the acid spill before it gets into any drain or septic systems. Plumbers acid is serious stuff (sulphuric) and will eat or dissolve it's way thru just about anything not designed to resist it. Older shops usually have cast iron pipes, which hold up well under the acid. But the corrosion and rust in the pipes doesn't. Bear this in mind before you go this route.
