The selector is not supposed to slip up between the 1 r and the 2 3. They might be bent or worn so they are separated. Maybe they will bend a little to come together. There should be a hole, maybe 1/8 inch in each one that you put a pin through to align them, then use the adjustments on the linkage to align the holes until you can get the pin through
