Trans Swap

I have a 1989 chevy 1 ton with a 454 and 4 spd. standard transmission. The transmission is on it's last leg,won't shift, the synchronizers and gears are bad and is making a heck of a racket. I also have a 1979 Ford F700 (2 ton) that we parked several years ago with a blowed up motor, the trans. was rebuilt a year before we parked it, 4 spd. manual shift. Can I put the 2 ton trans. in the one ton? If I can't do the swap how do you identify these transmissions to rebuilt the thing myself? Any help appreciated.
