2000 Astro Van AWD

I have a concern and would like to know if it is something I need to pay attention to.
I own a 2000 Astro AWD. When I am parked, say in a parking lot, and I back out of a parking spot and turn the front wheels either sharp left or right and put the tranny in drive and start to move I get a shutter in the front wheels. Another simular concern is when I fast accerlerate and the tranny shifts thru the gears the is a pronounced "thump, thump, thump" as it shifts. Once I am up to speed it settles out.
I have driven this van from the west coast to Minnesota to Mississippi with no apparent mechanical problems. I am hesitant to take the van into a repair shop due to my ignorance and or the chance that I could be taken advantage of. So, I ask you folks for some advice. Thanks in advance!!
