1949 3800 chevy panel brakesPosted by Doug Mayer on August 19, 2007 at 13:06:21 from (75.91.61.109): I have always had low brake pedal over the 32 years of ownership. Usually if I hit the brake under emergency conditions, the brake will go below the accelerator pedal which, with my big foot, revs the engine while I'm trying to stop. Some times the brake pedal will go to the floor. I went through a complete brake overhaul with the same results. The brake drums, wheel cylinders, master cylinder, are according to spec. All lines have been replaced. The brakes have been bled to death, the brake shoes are almost rubbing the drums. I have the hydrovac brake booster which is plumbed out of the system until I get the brake issue solved. The brakes will pump up, but will not stay up even with many replacements of the master cylinder. I learned to drive on '50 trucks and I was always able to adjust the brakes almost to the top. As follow up to my brake system problem, I pumped up my brakes and jammed a piece of wood between the brake pedal and seat which held the master cylinder under pressure. 18 hours later the master cylinder was still under the same amount of pressure. However, if I let up on the pedal, within 1-2 minutes the pedal heads for the floor.
