Not if the battery is dead, or if he connected with the charger off.
Theres a couple things I've seen happen when a charger is connected backwards I don't know what makes each happen maybe somebody else knows.
#1. Charger fuse/circuit breaker goes. (Probably the best thing that could happen)
#b. Charger goes up in smoke. (And its no good once the magic white smoke comes out)
#3. Battery gets repolarized. But in the process you ruin most of the cells. I saw a 12v that would put out 2v backwards!
#c. Battery cooks. Sometimes it'll light on fire too.
