Hi, I just got a '78 IH Loadstar 1800 box truck with a 404 engine. I'm wondering what kind of mileage I should expect (I know it won't be good). I don't know what kind of transmission it has. It's a five speed. If anyone knows, then do you know what other engines will fit on it? I was hoping to swap it with a diesel. If I can't, how fast do you think I can go without hurting the engine? Someone told me 55 mph. It just seems so low. I'm going to be going cross-country with it (just once). Is there any way to de-tune the engine so it will use less gas? Would the power loss be too great? If anyone can tell me anything about this, it would be great. Thank you.
