Stick with the classic. I've got a 36 ford 11/2 ton that I put a caddy 500, caddy TH400, coupled to the stock rear end and it will haul what eaver I can fit on it, and in iowa that includes tractors. I'm used to a little play in the steering, but windy days make me think I should weld some angle iron on and hook up some shocks on the front. There isn't many airheaded drivers on my back country roads so the brakes don't bother me, just don't expect porsche like handling. People are pretty forgiving when I do go through a city, the respect the old beasts, and might be a little intimidated by the big iron bumpers, but always seem to give me more than enough room to manuver. It gets cold here and the only thing I'm worried about is upgrading the radiator heater to a blower set up, other than that it works just fine with enough power to keep up to traffic speed, other wise you will have a heck of a time driving it. Like I was taught my first day at college for auto design KISS aka keep it simple stupid.
