Gas engines, Run them around 1200 RPM for about 15 to 20 minutes. This does two things. It gets the engine up to full operating temp, and if it's going to have a leak, it will show up by then. Then, take it out on the street and push it hard from 0 to 30 and back down, Hard again from 0 to 50 and back down, then hit it hard up to 70ish or so, and then drive it like you intend on driving it. After roughly 500 miles, change the oil. On Diesel engines, you generally have to run them as hard as you ever intend on running them in order to get them hot enough to seat in. If its in a pulling truck, hook it to a trailer, load it down and run it for about 20 minutes.
