I did the same thing about 15 years ago with a '85 F-150 with a six. But it was in the middle of winter and about 10 above zero. I was in a pole barn with torpedo heater and freezing my butt off. Eveything went to together great and I was just about to install the drive shaft when I saw the plate leaning against a shelf. I pulled the tranny and flywheel off and installed the plate. At the time I didn't realize the flywheel holes weren't symetrical and they only lined up one way. I must have gotten lucky the first time. With the combination of freezing, being tired and getting cut by the razor sharp edge of the freshly turned flywheel it took me twice as long to put everything back together the second time. I was not a happy camper. My opinion is to install the full shield. I know it's going to be a pain in the butt but I would think if the full shield is not installed it might knock the alignment of the drive line out of whack. I don't know this for sure but the time you use to do it right will be a lot less than if it doesn't fit right and you find out when something goes out. Just my two cents.
