Buck, If you do not align the bell housing with engine block correctly the bronze bushing in the end of the crank shaft will wear fast. The clutch will also not meet the flywheel at the same time on the top and the bottom. When the clutch is depressed it will align with the input shaft on the trans. then when released it will meet the top of the flywheel first if the engine block is spaced at the bottom and not at the top. The truck (engine & Trans) would most likely work without shield installed. However, I think you will be replacing the clutch and throw out bearing in a short time. The set up (spacing the bottom and not the top)you are thinking about could also cause damage to the rear main seal and bearings in your engine due to the angle the clutch will contact the flywheel.
