Bruce, that's good thinking! I can tell you've been in a lot of motors. I agree with you that if the top/bottom spacing is different it would cause the problems you point out. --I didn't explain myself real well though. When I install the bottom 1/2 of the plate I won't have it "sandwitched" between the engine and bell. I'll cut it just below the bottom bell bolt holes, while leaving more center most part of it extend up into the cavity probably 1/2 inch so that it will close the bottom bell area tight, but not separate it at all. It won't be on a bind that way. The only functional difference will be the lack of spacing of that plate thickness, and I don't think that will interfere with any thing. Right now the starter is mounted and works fine without that spacing. --I should have the truck running maybe today. I'll post a follow up to all of you guys once I road test it. --Thanks for taking the time to think that through and respond. I appreciate it, and all of the guys responses!
