Can't be a broken cam on a small-block Chevy...
The distributor is driven off the very back of the cam, and if the shaft were to break anywhere ahead of that, the dist. (and the engine) would stop.

Could be a broken rocker arm, pushrod bent or broken, or even a valve spring.
