1950 Chevy Speedometer

Posted by Ron on September 30, 2007 at 15:26:01 from (64.130.173.155):

I have a 1950 Chevy 3100 Series truck that has been in my family since it was new. Recently, it has developed a high pitched squeal in the speedometer cable/head. The needle erratically jerks around by 10 to 15 MPH.

Can anyone tell me whether this is in the cable or in the head. Will a new cable fix the problem?

For sure, I don't want to change out the original speedometer head, which shows 51,000 actual miles.

Thanks for any advice.
Ron
