take a look at your carb base & see if it is castiron(old 2bbl rochester was)...those engines & carbs had an exaust passage in the carb base to warm it up & the carb studs/bolts had a habit of rusting in two...that would cause the snap sound & also the running rough & whistling noise & not idleing(vacuum leak under carb base)...just something i have seen bfore...
