a 1996 model--while definitely NOT a classic truck--should be equipped with OBD-II diagnostic capablities.

So what does your scan tool tell you is wrong? And if you haven't connected it to a scan tool, you should; that's what OBD-II is for, so you can connect a scan tool and diagnose problems.

Problem could be fuel supply--volume OR pressure. Or it might be electrical/electronic, as you suggest. Might be a bad O2 sensor making the engine run lean, for example. A quality scan tool can point you in the right direction. If you're not in possession of one, take the truck to someone who does have one. Diagnosis of a computer-controlled car or truck without a scan tool can mean replacing a lot of parts unnecessarily...so use the correct diagnostic tool.

Now, if this WAS a classic truck, I'd look at either a bad coil or vapor lock as possible culprits...or at least a starting point.
