54 chev truck downunder

guys, i am from australia. i have a chev truck 3ton, series1100,235ci ,1954. my problem is the diff.i think the ratio is 6.1. my mechanic tells me to look for ring & pinion 4.88 ratio. this diff is huge and have been unable to locate anything in aust. i plan to install some clifford performance bits when i can sort out the diff drama. any assistance,guidance or whatever would be great.
