But for heavy hauling, the best way to go is with a truck 4 speed with a granny low gear. It might save you a burned up clutch sometime when you have to pull yourself out of a hole with a load on. I have always wondered why they didn't put overdrives on truck 4 speeds like they did with the 3 speeds. That combination would have given the best of both types: a deep low gear for starting out loaded and also an overdrive for high speed travel without the engine RPM's needing to be so high. Guess they thought it would be too expensive to sell well. I have seen photos of overdrives that have been adapted to car 4 speeds, specifically the Saginaw (which just used the overdrive from a Saginaw 3 speed and was fairly easy) and the T-10 (which used a special casting and seemed quite involved and expensive). Maybe it could be done with a truck 4 speed, but I have never seen one. There are some 5 speeds that came in some 90's pickups, but I don't know how strong they are and I am guessing they would be expensive. Good luck!
