1984 ford f600 dump truck

The truck is equipped with a gas 370 Lima 2v 2 bbl holly 5 speed, The truck runs good but the fuel mileage is bad even when not loaded, @4mpg the exhaust gasses are strong when ideling and it backfires during deceleration,any suggestions other than selling it and getting a deisel, my dodge 5.9 cummins gets 18 pulling a dozer.
