You are going to be looking for a number of issues. Are the floats in the carburetor set right? Do you have an aftermarket fuel pressure regulator in-line that may not be allowing enough fuel to the carburetor? Check your fuel filter. Some Fords in that era had a vapor return line through the carbon canister. Be sure your fuel is not returning to the tank through that line and check to see if your carbon canister (if it's still on there... mine I took off a long time ago) smells like raw fuel. I haven't read the other replies yet but that would be where I would start. It sounds to me like the "other mechanics" you asked either weren't much on mechanics, or they just didn't want to help.
