Depending on the carb you may be better off with the 4 barrell. Like someone else said, a spread bore 4 will do better than a 2 barrell as long as you keep the foot out of it. If GM go with a well built quadrajet, and make sure to replace the float as they are a source of trouble if it has one of the fiber floats. Also, Holley used to build a 450 cfm 4 barrell that did very well on gas mileage and would fit a quadrajet manifold. I had a 400 small block that got well over 20 mpg using one of those carbs.
