The truck probably has a 4.11 axle, which is why its so slow. Putting in an automatic won't solve this problem unless you get one of the newer overdrive transmissions, which I don't believe would adapt to your engine with any ease. An automatic in drive, and your three speed in 3rd gear, are both turning a 1-1 ratio, so overdrive is needed in here. There are some new aftermarket overdrives that may be adapted into your trucks driveline, but the prices seem a bit steep. And going 75 with that truck, the front end would have to be good and tight, and what shape are the brakes? John in Ne.
