FORD 400M

My 79 4X4 with the 400M has a lot of miles on it and next fall or winter I would like to do a overhaul. The motor has 2V carb, no a/c, C-6 trans. No knocking but does need valve seals, main seals, etc. I'd like to get a little more go out of the motor but funds are an issue. Any thoughts on the 400M? I was thinking 4V, headers, mild cam, some afer market Dist. This is 1/2 ton farm truck that goes to town for parts, pulls a small horse tr. once in a while. Thanks for the input.
