Help! '83 Chevy

Can anyone tell me where I can find information on the emissions system and vaccum hoses on my '83 Chevy 1/2T. It's a 305 4wd with a GM crate 350 installed. I'm trying to install the hoses and have no clue what the guy did that owned it before me. I would also like to know what and how everything functions. Is there any kind of book or website that explains this? For instance why is there a vaccum line going to the distributor? What is the exact function of that canister next to the radiator and is it necessary?
