WOW A couple questions

Couldn't believe it. Sunday, after re-wiring the truck (74 D600), I took it out for a test to see if I got the 2 speed rear hooked up right. Upon returning to the shop, Pop! go's a brake line (rusted rear right). Man let me tell ya, with only a single cylinder brake system, you got "NOTHING, NOTTA, NONE" when a line go's. Shutter to think what would have happened if I done that running a load. Funny (actually scary) part is the old ford (F150) did the same thing just 3 weeks ago. I had just return from fetching some water (1500 gal). Dropped the trailer and headed to a buddy's house. 20' out of the drive and on comes the light (front left rusted). Boy, I says to myself, if'n that had happened with that 12,000 lbs attached I'd..... shutter!!!!!

Question 1 - I need to find out what engine I have in the Dodge. Is there a way to decipher the VIN to get the engine series? Or number to look for on the block? It has a V8, (real small) 2 barrel carb, Intake dose not cover valley (separate cover plate), and dist is up front (at angle point towards the right side). Any help appreciated.

Question 2 - There is a spot in the speed-o cable that a wire is connected. It appears to have went down to the two speed rear switch. But wasn't connected when I got it. Is this some sort of speed-o calabrator thingy for Hi-Low?
