Sounds like you did all right to me.
Here in New England just FINDING a '53 with no big rust holes would be quite a deal no matter the money!
Brakes shouldn't be any great huge deal, especially if they work at all now, nor should fuel line. Take a hint from some of the other guys here though replace all the brake lines and all the fuel lines. It'll save you a world of trouble later on.
