With the cooler weather sounds like your automatic choke is staying on too long, maybe the vacuum pull off isn't working, and its getting way too rich, which is causing the black smoke. I'd take it to an older mechanic, or just any mechanic that isn't afraid of carburetors, that can check the choke operation. I'd also say the reason it runs better under full acceleration is the choke unloader is operating, and higher operation pulls the choke open further. John in Ne.
