With the exhaust getting that hot, I'd go for the exhaust pipe restriction, you are on the right track when you (temporarily) removed the catalytic converter, now loosen the lead down pipes at the manifold, and see if you get a sudden power increase, it'll be noisy, hope you can do that in your neighborhood. If not, then I'd be checking timing, even fuel pressure. John in Nebr.
