There are alot of different ways to shift a 5 & 4. One thing you want to avoid though is trying to shift into or out of low gear in your auxillary tranny on the fly. It just isn"t worth the aggravation. You can usually start out in 2nd and 2nd shifting your main box thru to 3rd or 4th depending on your load size and road conditions. If you got a pretty hard pull goin on maybe shft your main to 3rd followed by shifting your aux. to direct (3rd). Next shift your main to 4th and immediately bring the 4 speed back to 2nd. This is called split shifting. You must do it quickly, cleanly, and you have to keep your RPMs up to accomplish this. You have to have your $hit together and have to be able to walk and chew gum. You do the same thing down shifting only in reverse, shifting your main down one gear and your auxillary up one. When splitting always shift your main before the auxillary. Off road you can usually mix and match your gears any way that suits you. For instance if you are coming out of the field with a load of corn, you might find that 3rd on your main box and low on your auxillary starts out and pulls pretty good. When you think you are not going to get it and about ready to give up, give her one more trip it will come to you. Good luck.
