I had a 1965 Chevy with a two-piece driveshaft and carrier bearing setup. I found out from somebody after going through several new carrier bearings that there is a certain procedure for making sure that the carrier bearing is lined up properly.
Remove the rear drive shaft and change the carrier bearing. Reassemble complete driveshaft and tighten everything except the hold-down bolts for the carrier bearing.
Put the truck on jackstands so that all both rear wheels are off the ground.
Start the truck, put it in 1st gear, and let out the clutch slowly.
Leaving the truck idling, carefully get under the truck and tighten down the carrier bearing hold down bolts.
It worked for me!
